Overview

Element have an excellent opportunity for a Deputy Analytical Laboratory Manager to support the Analytical Lab Manager in the management of the Organic and Inorganic department from extraction to analysis. The Deputy Analytical Lab manager is a key member of the senior leadership team. Working closely with the ALM to manage and support the various labs within the Analytical Lab remit (GC, VOC, ICP etc.)

 

Element Deeside is the largest analytical chemistry laboratory within the Element Group and the market leading UK laboratory undertaking the testing of soils, waters, wastes, oils, NAPLs, ambient air, soil vapours and gases from all over the world.  The laboratory undertakes high volume routine analysis as well as offering bespoke method development, technical support and hydrocarbon forensic interpretations to enhance the support we can deliver.  The laboratory has an international reputation for service excellence and supports clients that require a higher level of technical expertise, reliability in data quality and seamless project management from sample collection to timely delivery of data in the format of choice.

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage smaller and specialty labs spaces as designated by ALM
  • Work to UKAS standard (ISO 17025 and MCERTS) to ensure that the agreed quality standards and requirements e.g. calibrations, AQC charts etc. are continually adhered to by all members of the department
  • Support ALM to ensure that all work carried in out the department complies with documented procedures and samples are handled correctly and to a high standard
  • Efficiently organise team ensuring samples are analysed to a high standard by suitably trained staff members within the scheduled time as delegated by ALM
  • Organise workflow and ensuring that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
  • Assist ALM in the leadership of the analytical team, people management, development and mentoring. Oversee the progression and development of analytical lab colleagues.
  • Monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching
  • Project manage new methods/equipment
  • Receive queries/complaints and resolve problems
  • Ensure compliance with company health and safety requirements, promoting a proactive safety attitude to ensure the safety of self and others
  • Administrative tasks – completion of all necessary documentation/records e.g. training, maintenance
  • Support ALM in determining requisite staffing levels to deliver against production requirements.
  • Ordering and monitoring of laboratory equipment - liaising between engineers and suppliers to resolve problems
  • Use LIMS/Web manager to process samples and ensure tractability
  • Supporting a LEAN and 5S culture within the laboratory.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal knowledge and skills relevant to role through self-directed learning

Skills / Qualifications

  • Strong and broad technical experience
  • Proven people manager with experience in managing busy is lab essential
  • Excellent people skills, a strong collaborative spirit and can-do problem solving mentality
  • Scientific Degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years relevant experience
