Overview

Element has an opportunity for a Senior Composites Engineer to join our rapidly expanding team. The position will suit applicants wishing to exploit their polymer/technical knowledge in a commercial environment, as part of a fast-growing company with global reach.

In the short-medium term the position will involve taking responsibility for material/component performance programmes. This will necessitate organising and conducting test suits, data analysis/interpretation, technical reporting, and interaction with clients.

The position requires extensive knowledge of composite materials and mechanical test methods (e.g., tensile, fatigue, creep). Specific experience with thermoplastic/thermoset composites is a necessity.

The successful applicant will work on a variety of short and longer term projects with several active simultaneously.

The Senior Engineer position must be proficient in a number of core business and technical skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and run universal test machines, as well as servo-hydraulic machines, to perform mechanical tests on composite materials to a range of standards (eg. ASTM, ISO)
  • Process and analyse raw test data
  • Write technical reports, adding value for clients
  • Write/contribute to technical proposals for prospective clients
  • Provide technical and engineering leadership, and supports the development of new technologies within a local laboratory
  • Be accountable for accurate and timely release of testing data to customers including sign-offs of quality control data as acceptable
  • Interact with customers on technical issues and questions
  • Be confident in making both formal and informal presentations on conventional and/or routine testing to a wide range of stakeholders
  • Assist in the professional development of novice technicians and engineers within the local laboratory

Skills / Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety
  • Possess a high level of expertise related to scope, core theories, concepts, terminologies and boundaries of chosen engineering discipline
  • Possess a Bachelors of Science degree in a science or testing related field
  • Have a minimum of 2 years’ pertinent post degree engineering experience, or advanced academic/professional qualifications with some hands-on experience
  • In-depth understanding of testing concepts and ASTM / ISO standards
  • Extensive experience performing mechanical testing on composite materials (eg, tensile, compression, fatigue, creep, impact, shear)
