Overview

As a member of the operational leadership team in the Aberdeen laboratory, and under the supervision of the General Manager, the Operations Manager – Fatigue and Fracture Toughness, performs a variety of leadership responsibilities within Aberdeen to ensure timely and accurate test results are delivered to the customer. All Operational Leadership positions must be proficient in a number of core business skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety and quality standards, code of conduct, people & team development, P&L management and company policies and procedures. 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Ensure all operational activities comply with safety and regulatory standards. 
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits to maintain a safe working environment. 
  • Promote and enforce a culture of safety and accountability. 
  • Guide and mentor colleagues on safe working practices. 
  • Ensure all Risk Assessments and COSHH Assessments are regularly reviewed, updated, communicated and understood by the team. 
  • Act on any safety related incidents / observations in a timely manner and, where necessary, implement corrective actions to mitigate reoccurrence 
  • Ensure appropriate training is provided to the team in line with roles and responsibilities. 
  • Manage contractors appropriately to ensure they’re working on site safely and conforming to relevant procedures. 
  • e laboratory to retain relevant ISO accreditations by ensuring all operational activities comply with established quality standards and regulatory requirements. 
  • Support regular system and technical quality audits and process reviews to identify deviations and implement corrective actions. 
  • Lead colleagues to ensure continuous quality improvement initiatives are delivered successfully. 
  • Provide training and guidance to the operational team on quality protocols and best practices. 
  • Effectively drive forward the Management of Change process. 
  • Support achievement of revenue and EBITDA targets through accurate weekly forecasting by maintaining a clear and realistic production plan.  
  • Where there are any risks to achieving targets, identify solutions in a timely manner to mitigate negative impact to the bottom line.  
  • Close management of cost base by utilising cost effective suppliers and preventative maintenance of equipment to mitigate unexpected costly repairs. 
  • Ensure there is accountability at all levels in the department so everyone contributes to the achievement of financial goals. 
  • Provide input and support to the General Manager during the month end process. 

 

 

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from an accredited 4-year college or university in an engineering or technical-related discipline, or a minimum of 7 years of experience in a management role ideally with operations management experience gained in an accelerated-growth organization with a diploma. 
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety with extensive knowledge of the current suite of testing capabilities. 
  • Proven ability to support and train staff members for the department in order to meet customers’ expectations on testing. 
  • Strong computer skills with basic mathematical skills with the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry a plus. 
  • Technical leadership is vital to the production and operation of assigned tests with advanced working knowledge to operate various testing equipment. 
  • Ability to communicate (written and oral) effectively with clients and colleagues with great attention to detail and timing of results. 
  • Proven ability to multitask and work under strict timelines. 
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to effectively establish and maintain two-way communications to understand the needs and concerns of all departments. 
  • Understanding of continuous improvement disciplines such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, etc. 
  • Strong project management, analytical and problem-solving skills provide go-to insight in the daily efficient operation of the lab. 
  • Proven track record of success with regard to technical competency both inside and outside of the lab. 
  • Proven understanding and experience of P&L Management.
