Overview

Element has an opportunity for a highly skilled and detail-oriented Calibration Engineer to oversee and manage the complete calibration programme across our two calibration sites in Warrington and Birchwood.

 

This is a critical role that ensures all measuring instruments, equipment, and systems across the sites are maintained to the highest standards of accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements. This position requires strong technical expertise in calibration processes, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to coordinate effectively with teams at both sites to ensure calibration schedules and requirements are met.

Responsibilities

Calibration programme management:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a robust calibration programme across both the Warrington and Birchwood test labs
  • Ensure calibrations meet requirements of relevant calibration standards and accreditation requirements (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025, BS 476, EN standards)
  • Manage calibration schedules, ensuring all calibrations are conducted on time and in accordance with the established timelines and procedures
  • Oversee all calibration activities, including internal calibrations and third-party services
  • Complete pre-calibration paperwork to set out the acceptance criteria and justifications for using the chosen calibration laboratory (approved supplier)
  • Complete post-calibration paperwork to perform a detailed assessment of the calibration results including, but not limited to, checking compliance against the calibration criteria and determining levels of drift. In cases of non-compliant results, assisting with the preparation of an impact assessment
  • Using calibration results to determine re-scale factors
  • Calculating measurement uncertainty budgets
  • Correcting acceptance bands for error

Cross-site coordination:

  • Work closely with teams at both test labs to ensure all calibration requirements and schedules are coordinated and adhered to
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the two sites, ensuring smooth communication and resolving any issues related to calibration activities or discrepancies
  • Collaborate with technical teams to minimise operational disruptions and ensure calibration processes run efficiently and accurately

Quality and compliance:

  • Support the quality team in monitoring of calibration processes and systems to ensure adherence to internal and external quality standards
  • Maintain accurate and traceable calibration records, ensuring all documentation is compliant with quality management systems
  • Investigate and resolve any nonconformities, discrepancies, or equipment failures related to calibration

Reporting and continuous improvement:

  • Prepare and present regular reports on the status of the calibration programme, highlighting any issues, challenges, or areas for improvement
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the calibration processes
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new calibration technologies and industry developments, recommending upgrades or changes as needed

Equipment and supplier management:

  • Oversee the procurement, maintenance, and management of calibration equipment and tools
  • Liaise with external suppliers and service providers to ensure timely calibration and repairs of specialist equipment

Skills / Qualifications

  • A minimum requirement of A-levels in Mathematics and Science
  • Experience in calibration engineering, including managing calibration programmes across multiple sites is desirable
  • Strong knowledge of calibration standards (ISO 17025, etc.) and the ability to apply them in a practical setting is desirable
