Overview

Element is seeking a Chemist II (Materials Characterization) to join our Mississauga Health Sciences laboratory. The Chemist II evaluates the chemical and physical properties of organic and/or inorganic substances, applying established methods, procedures, and laboratory instrumentation to perform analytical testing. This role also conducts method validation and supports method development, interprets data to draw conclusions, participates in failure investigations and deviations, and contributes to the preparation of client reports and quotes.

Responsibilities

  • Reporting Structure — Reports to a supervisor or manager and operates within established departmental oversight.
    Collaboration with Leadership — Works in close coordination with the direct manager and colleagues, receiving routine direction from management and senior staff.
  • Work Status Communication — Provides daily updates on task progress and maintains effective collaboration with team members.
  • Training of Junior Staff — Contributes to the development of less experienced colleagues through training and knowledge sharing.
  • Issue Management — Manages routine matters independently and escalates moderately complex or intricate issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Process Focus — Maintains a concentrated focus on a single process or on multiple tasks that are closely aligned with a single process area.
  • Technical Knowledge — Demonstrates a solid understanding of various compounds, reagents, and solutions relevant to laboratory operations.
  • Analytical Capability — Performs analytical work independently using approximately 25%–50% of departmental methods, techniques, and equipment.
  • Subject Matter Expertise — Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) in at least one designated area within the laboratory.

Skills / Qualifications

  • GMP lab experience
  • Physical chemistry/materials science background
  • Hands-on experience with XRD, thermal analysis, microscopy, FTIR, etc...
  • Good time management and prioritization
  • Intermediate reading, writing, and math skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan daily work and arrange activities to meet deadlines.
  • Follows instructions, both written and verbal and able to provide clear instruction to others.
  • Good critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to draft technical reports without guidance.
  • Basic understanding of cost control measures and how 5S and SQDC principals impact lab flow.
  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in analytical chemistry or life sciences (microbiology, etc.)
  • 2-5 Years Relevant Experience

Physical Requirements: 

  • Lifting up to 40 pounds on occasion
  • Walking throughout the day
  • Ability to climb to elevated locations within the site (Approximately 15 feet)
  • Ability to read and write
