  • Overview

    Element has an opportunity for a Senior Machinist. In this role you will be a member of the operations team in one of the various laboratories across Element. The Machining position performs a variety of routine and non-routine machining assignments within the department assigned and insures timely and accurate test results under direct supervision.  The technician positions must be proficient in a number of core business skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures.


    • Design, sets-up and perform a majority machining tasks according to customer specifications and requirements 
    • Perform machinist duties utilizing the added skills and knowledge that come with earning an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in a mechanical related field
    • Mentor and train machinists who have less experience through effective communication of technical data
    • Explain machining techniques and specifications to a larger group drawing from past experience and knowledge as an expert on best practices and customer specifications
    • Serve as machinist team lead and direct and / or coordinate work flow within the shop
    • Maintains equipment and schedules preventative maintenance
    • Gathers and records dimensions in accordance with quality assurance requirements 
    • Fully responsible and accountable for own work product and practices
    • Directs and leads the work of others within the shop or department
    • Responsible for a significant range of resources and utilization of resources 
    • Use blueprints and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product
    • Ensure timely and accurate results with no supervision and technical input
    • Hold team members and peer machinists accountable for machining requirements 

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Experience of programming and operating CNC Milling and CNC Turning (lathes)
    • Experience of working with metallic and composite/polymer materials
    • Qualifications in Engineering or Manufacturing
    • Diploma or GED certificate preferred with college or vocational school coursework welcomed
    • Advanced engineering qualifications, normally at Bachelor degree level
    • Significant experience in a machine shop environment
    • Proven understanding related to machining concepts, measuring instruments and dimensional concepts
    • Working knowledge of machine shop safety protocol
    • Strong computer skills and basic mathematical skills with the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry a plus
    • Ability to lift <50 lbs. often and > 50 lbs. on occasion and stand on feet for long periods of time
    • Ability to perform complex machining and the ability to work alone and make independent decisions on clarification or confirmation of machining procedures
    • Advanced ability to read and understand customer specifications and perform the machining required
    • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the machining field
    • Advanced skills in machining protocol in accordance with customer specifications with the ability to maintain and troubleshoot equipment
