  • Overview

    Element has an exciting opportunity for a Metallurgy Technician to join our team in Newbridge, Edinburgh. As a member of the operations team, this position will receive the appropriate training to enable them to successfully perform the variety of materials testing operations required in order to support our customers and our growing business.


    An understanding of mechanical testing, material properties and previous experience of working within a UKAS accredited test environment would be advantageous but equally importantly we are looking for someone who is passionate about developing a career with one of the worlds leading testing, qualification and certification organisations.



    Reporting to the Senior Technician and working as part of the Mechanical & Metallurgical Test team, this role will be responsible for preparing test samples, test equipment, testing and reporting of test results of our clients materials, with key responsibilities including:

    • Conducting sample preparation, microstructural evaluation, phase counts, corrosion tests on Duplex, Super Duplex, Carbon Steel and Nickel Alloy microstructures
    • Perform AUTV validation after training 
    • Performing routine preventative maintenance on laboratory testing equipment
    • Ensuring that measuring devices are accurate and within calibration when being used
    • Ensuring that test results are recorded accurately and correctly in accordance with laboratory procedures
    • Monitoring the availability of laboratory test consumables
    • Assisting the ‘booking in’ of jobs
    • Contributing to the improvement in the organisation and efficiency of the laboratory by implementing agreed improvement actions
    • Carrying out other duties as reasonably requested by the Senior Testing Technician
    • Ensuring that the highest standards of cleanliness and housekeeping are maintained
    • Undertake and complete satisfactorily any training as required
    • Working overtime as reasonably required

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Degree / Diploma in Metallurgy or related discipline
    • Experience working in a laboratory in the field of metallurgy testing
    • Experience with sample preparation, microstructural evaluation, phase counts and corrosion tests
    • Experience working with materials such as Duplex, Super Duplex, Carbon Steel and Nickel Alloy microstructures
    • Experience conducting metallurgical-based tests is advantageous
    • IT literacy
    • Excellent report writing skill
    • Self-motivated team playing with excellent organisational and communication skills
    • Ability to obtain and record, in an accurate manner, measurements using appropriate instruments
